Worried about bunions?

bunionsBunions are an enlargement of the big toe joint with dislocation and often pain. The correct terminology for a bunion is Hallux Abducto-Valgus (HAV).

Arthritis tends to develop in the joint and often causes footwear issues. Hammer toes can then form along with callous, corns and ingrown toe nails.

While bunions are not hereditary, your foot posture and biomechanics are hereditary which is why we commonly see bunions within families. Bunions can also be caused by poor foot posture and bone length discrepancies which prevents the big toe joint working properly leading to dysfunction, dislocation and joint destruction. This is why people with flat feet, or heavily pronated walking patterns are more likely to develop bunions. Excessive movement in your joints, footwear and hormone changes can also play a role.

The team at Brindabella Podiatry have many years of experience to accurately assess and diagnose your condition. We have the most recent 3D foot imaging laser scanner and computerised pressure plate system which we use to help accurately assess conditions and make orthotics when required.

Our appointments and orthotics can be claimed on the spot from your Health Fund and no referral is necessary. We can directly refer for X-Ray, Ultrasound or MRI if required.

If you are concerned about bunions or have big toe joint pain, book a biomechanical assessment today. Ph: 62932024.
